The flexible connection absorbs the recoil of discharge and allows for cylinder movement and installation tolerance, which a rigid pipe would transmit into the manifold. DH33 connects a 1 7/8" valve to a 1½" manifold; DH49 connects a 2½" valve to a 2½" manifold.
